5 sarape
(Sp. model spelled same [sarape], origin not found)Watts glosses this as a band of silk or wool, generally about twelve inches wide and sometimes fringed on the ends. It is worn like a belt, wrapped several times around the waist. Watts includes serape as an alternate form, but he indicates that serape also has separate meanings (see serape). This item of clothing is commonly seen in illustrations depicting the early vaqueros. The DRAE and Santamaría give similar meanings for the term. Both gloss sarape as a wool blanket or cotton quilt with a hole in the center for a person's head. Generally brightly colored, it is worn as a protection against the cold or used as a blanket. In Mexico, zarape is also an acceptable spelling. -
